Ocean Habitats Launched the ‘Thousand Reef Challenge’ to Protect Florida’s Waters

June 8, 2019 By Victor Font Leave a Comment

Fort Myers Beach, Florida – Ocean Habitat’s unique ‘mini-reef’ structure attracts and produces marine life and filters water in polluted coastal waterways.  Installed under docks, the Mini Reef supports hundreds of fish and crabs when fully developed and can filter on average 30,000 gallons of water a day per unit.

“We strive to fulfill our mission of bringing coastal waters to life” said David Wolff, Ocean Habitats founder. “You look around the canals and it’s a biological desert everywhere, it’s amazing what’s growing on our units in these same canals.”

Fish-Tale Marina and Ocean Habitats, Inc launched the Thousand Reef Challenge and the One Reef Project to track the results.  “We couldn’t be more excited to participate in the ‘Thousand Reef Challenge’. As a State of Florida Clean and Resilient Marina, along with having Fish-Tale Waterfront Dining designated as an Ocean Friendly Restaurant, this project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to protecting our waters”, says Fish-Tale Marina owner Al Durrett.

The foundation will announce a push for sponsors to donate towards funding installation of 1,000 new units into Florida’s waters over the summer.

Wolff says “The One Reef Project will track what we are doing – how much water is being filtered, how many units are going in and how many fish are being produced,” he said. In attendance via Facebook live was Dr. Tracey Fanara from Mote Marine Labs known as Inspector Planet on Instagram Florida Gulf Coast University marine and ecological studies associate professor James Douglass will also attend and address the press about the importance of filter feeders in the areas backwaters and offer his support for the project.

Grouper Grapple Registration is now open! The Grouper Grapple was founded by Brian Peachey in 2013 as a means to give back to the community and show support to Combat Wounded Veterans that have served our country. The tournament itself started with just 16 boats in 2013, and has grown to 22 entries in 2014 and 35 entries in 2015. By teaming with Freedom Alliance they have been able to turn the event into an actual vehicle that provides much needed therapy for combat wounded veterans returning from service.

The Grouper Grapple and Freedom Alliance provides the veterans with transportation to and from the event, hotel accommodations, breakfast, lunch and dinner Thursday – Sunday, Back Bay fishing trips, commemorative plaques, entry into the tournament and tournament events, specialized apparel and a chance to join their brothers in arms in an atmosphere designed just for them!

Fish Tale Marina on Fort Myers Beach offers anglers a prime location for this one of a kind event and provides dock slips free of charge to all registered teams. The marina is home to high end amenities, wet slips for boats up to 65 feet in length and a ships store that stocks all of the essentials for a day of fishing.  For more information on the Grouper Grapple and to Register your Team for this incredible Fishing  Tournament check out their official website at http://www.groupergrapple.com

Santini Farmers Market

(FORT MYERS BEACH, FL), (October 12, 2015) The Santini Sunrise Farmers Market is set to open its 2015 season on Tuesday, November 4, 2015. Located in Santini Marina Plaza, this family friendly market showcases farm fresh produce, delicious prepared foods, live entertainment, and local information about Fort Myers Beach. It operates every Tuesday from 9am until 1pm. The market is a rain or shine event that continues until Easter.

There has been a lot of positive buzz about the new and improved market. Event Coordinator, Bonnie Roberts, says, “An exciting change for the Santini Sunrise Farmer’s Market this year is we’ve gone “all fresh”, homegrown, and handmade. Our jewelry makers will be making and customizing their pieces on site, Honey from the Hood will be doing hourly demos on harvesting honey, Donna Elias, watercolor artist and Mara Balodis canvas artist will be painting on site, Connie Eugenio will be engraving rings and bracelets ‘to go’. You will see taffy being made by Bradley Taffy, Gemini Jelly brings her own homemade jellies, and Peaches Provisions sells homemade Pickles and Olives. Other items for sale will include Moringa Tree Oils, fresh seasonings, herbal balms, local handmade baskets, pottery, beach photography, carved wood art, hemp bamboo clothing, homemade candles, air plants, natural pet treats, handmade soaps, and so much more.”

“We are excited to begin our season at the Santini Sunrise Farmers Market,” says Al Durrett, Manager of Santini Marina Plaza. “We usually have a nice selection of vendors at the market and customers can expect to find farm fresh produce, baked goods, artwork, honey, homemade jewelry and other original creations.”

New vendors are welcome to participate in the market. Contact Bonnie Roberts at 239-443-8810 or e-mail her at bgrsgs@gmail.com to obtain a copy of the regulations and register for the market.

Bonnie invites all to join her for an opening day packed full of “fresh” activities on November 4th. Remember, every dollar spent at the farmers’ market is a dollar re-invested in the local economy.

Pancake Breakfast Benefiting Beach Elementary

October 29, 2015 By frontdesk@thefishtalemarina.com Leave a Comment

Pancake Breakfast Benefiting Beach Elementary photo

(FORT MYERS BEACH, FL), (October 5, 2015)- Fish Tale Marina will host their 3rd annual Pancake Breakfast at the Fish-Tale Marina Ship’s Store on Saturday November 7th from 8am-10am. Al & Kathy Durrett, owners of Fish Tale Marina along with Fort Myers Beach Mayor, Anita Cereceda, Councilman Allen Mandel, and Beach Elementary Principal, Larry Wood will be flipping pancakes.

Sausage and Bacon will round out your breakfast plate along with orange juice and coffee. Ingredients for the breakfast are being generously donated by Truly Scrumptious and Skye’s Restaurant is donating Bloody Mary’s. The Pancake Breakfast, a fundraiser for the Fort Myers Beach Elementary Educational Programs, raised $1,200 last year. “We hope to double that this year,” said Durrett. Be sure to come out, bring your neighbors and friends along with your favorite $20 bill or any donation and support the Fort Myers Beach Elementary School. Principal Larry Wood said, “The Pancake Breakfast at Fish Tale Marina is a great community event. Our local dignitaries do the cooking and serving, which allows our children, their families and friends the chance to enjoy the food.

Many of our friends from the frozen north join us for the wonderful pancakes and sausage while contributing to the success of the Beach School. Many thanks to Al and Kathy Durrett, Truly Scrumptious, and Skye’s for making this event happen again this year.”
